The IBM 4341's speed is up to three times that of a comparable System/370 Model 138 processor.

**Advanced New Technologies**

New memory and logic technologies—the densest yet developed by IBM—contribute to the compactness, improved cost-performance and reliability of new IBM information systems. Several of the systems, for example, incorporate new ¼-inch memory chips that can store 64,000 bits of information each. New packaging techniques permit eight chips, totaling 512,000 bits, to be mounted on a single 1-inch-square module.

Also introduced in several new IBM systems are ¼-inch central processor logic chips that have up to 704 circuits each—more than 15 times denser than logic chips previously used in any IBM central processor. The new circuits can switch in 3 billionths of a second. As many as nine of the new logic chips can be packaged on one 2-inch-square module. This single module is equivalent to more than 700 earlier ½-inch modules.

**New Distributed Office System**

The new IBM 3730 distributed office communication system is being marketed to computer users who wish to extend distributed processing systems to include office system applications. A basic IBM 3730 system, consisting of a text-entry display station, a printer and a communications controller, can streamline office operations and improve word processing productivity.

**More Versatile Office Systems**

High-speed impact printing is now available with the IBM Office System 6 family. The IBM 6/442 and IBM 6/452 information processors combine impact printing with the system's text editing, administrative record processing and electronic communications.

Also introduced was the low-cost IBM 6/420 for applications not requiring magnetic card capability or printing at each workstation.

Office System 6 information processors offer an advanced capability for handling many administrative tasks. For users with customer files, for example, the system can arrange information, then automatically select from various categories to print out alphabetized lists, individualized letters and addressed envelopes.

Electronic document distribution, another major application of Office System 6, enables users to control transmission of information between locations so that each receives only the information for which it is authorized.

**Electronic Typewriters Save Time**

Also speeding office work are two new IBM electronic typewriters, the Model 50 and Model 60. They can help typists perform many time-consuming tasks automatically.

A built-in microprocessor provides electronic control of a total of 12 different typing functions on the two models. For example, typists can correct a full line of words by depressing a single erase key. The words and any underlining are automatically lifted from the paper. The microprocessor also helps provide automatic indenting and centering, as well as electronic storage of margins and tabs, phrases and sentences.

Among the many enhancements of new IBM electronic typewriters are non-glare keys enlarged 25% for better typing touch, plus multi-purpose keys that permit execution of many new functions—such as automatic centering or error-correction.
